In 1944 she enlisted in the United States Navy and served two years in the WAVES as a links trainer in Pensacola, FL. She was discharged December 10, 1945. Following her discharge from the Navy, she headed to California with a girlfriend.

From there they traveled to Ohio, first settling in Bryan where Mary was born then on to Montpelier where Kathy (1957) and Nancy (1959) were born.
In 1964 they moved to Twinsburg, Ohio. First living on Old Mill Road and then to Sunview Drive. Fay returned to her teaching career once all of her children were in school and taught for fourteen years at Ledgeview Elementary in Macedonia. Fay continued on Sunview Dr for several years after Jim died in 2002 but eventually moved to Summit Point in Macedonia.
