GARY MICHAEL VARKONYI, 60
CLEVELAND - Gary Michael Varkonyi, 60, formerly of Youngstown, quietly passed away on September 7, 2016 at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland from complications of Multiple Myeloma.
Blessing-Hine Funeral Home in Twinsburg, OH is handling cremation.
Burial will be at Tod Cemetery in Youngstown at a later date.
Gary was born in Youngstown, Ohio on April 14, 1956, the son of Joseph and Betty (Berndt) Varkonyi. He was a 1974 graduate of Chaney High School. Shortly after graduation, Gary honorably served as a member of the Army Reserves.
He was self-employed in Cleveland as owner of Varkonyi Upholstery. Being very detailed oriented, he took great pride in the work his company created.
A big guy at 6''6" with long hair and long beard, he could be an intimating figure. But all who knew him knew what a sweet and thoughtful man he was. He would always drop what he was doing to help out any one in need. When his hair was long enough, he would get it cut and donate it to Locks of Love to make wigs for children with cancer. He frequently donated blood. He served as a volunteer fireman with previous employers.
Gary enjoyed many hobbies such as bowling, hunting, fishing, brewing beer, playing cards, playing pool and photography. He loved vegetable gardening and shared his bounty with others.
He will be deeply missed by his son Gary Varkonyi II, daughter Samantha Varkonyi and grandchildren Katherine and Wyatt Minear, all of Cleveland.
He was a cherished brother to four sisters; Sandra (Jeff) Childers of Boardman, Joann Pershing of Youngstown, Nancy Varkonyi of Mesa, AZ and Linda (David) Sanchez of Scottsdale, AZ, and brother Richard (Sharon) Varkonyi of Girard. He leaves numerous loving nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by former wife Sue Varkonyi, her children and grandchildren.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Leona Varkonyi.
The family wishes to thank the many doctors and staff of Cleveland MetroHealth (Main) Medical Center for their warm and attentive care. A special thank you to the David Simpson Hospice House for the compassionate care given to Gary in his last few days of life.
Family will receive friends for a visitation from 6PM until 9PM on Friday, September 16, 2016 at the American Legion of Hudson, 10001 Aurora Hudson Rd, Hudson, OH 44236
