George Arnott Galloway died Feb. 23 at the age of 94. Raised in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, he emigrated to the U.S. at 14, graduating from Garfield Heights High School. He served in the Army''s quartermasters corps during World War II, driving a gasoline truck all over Europe, often in blackout conditions. He married his wartime pen pal, Margarette McLean, in 1946. As a clerk in the Cleveland Post Office, he told parcel post trucks where to go, having memorized nearly every street in Greater Cleveland. Retiring in 1976, he went to work serving God as moderator of Garfield Trinity Baptist Church. A skilled woodworker, he made book stands, candle sticks and other beautiful things. If he wasn''t making something, he was fixing something - MacGyver had nothing on him. He golfed and walked two miles a day, habits he kept well into his 80s. He kept his other habits - patience, fortitude, faith, and good humor - to the end. He lived his life in a way that exemplified The Greatest Generation. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, he is survived by daughter Barbara, son-in-law Pete, and grandsons Peter and David Mudrak of Minerva; brother James Galloway of Tulsa, Okla.; in-laws Jean and Robert Smolik of Chardon, and many nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Pastor Carol Leahy officiating, with burial to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
