Gunes Basaran

September 1, 1931 - April 26, 2020

Gunes Nur Basaran, 88, was born September 1, 1931, in Istanbul, Turkey, to her parents Nurettin and Hikmet Akkal. She is survived by her husband of 64 years and the love of her life, Dr. Orhan Basaran; sons, Mehmet (Kathy) Basaran and Ali (Jodi) Basaran; daughters, Goksu (Brian) Kretch and Aysu (David Kaczmarek) Basaran. She leaves behind 16 cherished grandchildren, seven beautiful great grandchildren and family in Turkey including her sister, Serpil Karaali.

Gunes' adventurous spirit brought her to America, and along with her husband, they built a world centered around a growing family. Together, they loved to travel, enjoy new experiences and play competitive card games until wee hours of the morning. As "homemaker extraordinaire," Gunes took the greatest pride in being able to provide Turkish meals for her large family and welcome friends into her home. The Basarans spent their later years living between Warren, Ohio, and Clearwater, Florida.

Gunes was a bright light, a sun, in our lives. She will be forever missed by all the people whose lives she touched.

Gunes will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio, in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) or Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
