Obituary

John Greenwood Cleminshaw, 88, of Akron, passed away very peacefully on June 9,

2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 16, 1937, in Paterson,

New Jersey, to Leonard and Lillian (Bailey) Cleminshaw and spent most of his adult life

in Northeast Ohio, calling communities like Independence, Hudson, Silver Lake and

Aurora home. Never far from the water, John also spent several decades snow-birding

to New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

John received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he

rowed crew. Early in his career, John served as an officer in the United States Coast

Guard and was stationed on a 350-foot Coast Guard Cutter in the North Atlantic in the

early days of the Cold War.

John was the founder, president and owner of John G. Cleminshaw, Incorporated during

the period spanning 1979 to 2003, a mass appraisal firm that still enjoys success today.

He graduated from the Harvard Business School’s OPM program while running the

company and found time to complete many courses in pursuit of an MBA along with

countless real estate appraisal courses. His long memory and life-long commitment to

learning served him well, as he affectionately earned the title from family members of

“Mr. Jeopardy” in his elder years.

John loved all animals big and small. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Helen, and he

was fortunate to see and experience many of the incredible destinations the world has

to offer. John also enjoyed woodworking and curating salt water fish. His greatest

passion was sailing, which he found tremendously relaxing. But, what John cherished

most was spending time with his treasured family and friends.

John is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Helen (Kronseder) Cleminshaw and

his beloved daughter, Suzanne Cleminshaw. He is survived by his son, John David

Cleminshaw; granddaughters Nicole Marie Cleminshaw (Cody Marden) and Courtney

Lynn Cleminshaw-Mahan (Michael Mahan); great granddaughter Madelein Marden; and

his nieces, Victoria Cleminshaw and Ann Caskey.

Services are private; John’s place of rest is at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg. Online
