Obituary

Madelon Janet Curtis (nee Johnson), R.N., BSN, M.Ed, and ANA certified in Gerontology, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 31, 1929. On November 29, 2023, she was promoted to glory!

Two husbands, and her parents Charles "Jackie" Mammon Johnson, and Claudie "Claudia" Mae Johnson preceded her in death. She and her mom moved from Cleveland to Twinsburg in 1938.

Madelon's education included graduation from the Twinsburg School system, Cleveland City Hospital School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, and Kent State University. Other classes, completed for certification and continuing education, included a 3 year post-graduate course at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. The Lord opened each of these doors which served her and others very well during her 50+ years of working , and also in retirement.

Employment and professional opportunities were experienced in areas of: staff nursing, administration, teaching in Programs of nursing, a school of nursing, hospital and nursing home staff development, advanced nursing positions, leadership in pilot programs from Washington D.C. , Quality Assurance, and also Utilization Review. This ambitious woman of God worked at: the University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital (CMGH), Fairhill Psychiatric Hospital, CMGH School of Nursing, Cuyahoga County Community College, Cleveland State Hospital, private duty nursing, VA Medical Center at Brecksville, Cleveland and branch sites, Nursing Homes, professional organizations (including Board membership). Additionally, she served in the church and in community activities. She worked at the polls during November elections.

Madelon enjoyed music! She especially valued the experience of singing with the Sweet Adelines for 7 ½ years, singing in church choirs, and playing the piano. Most of all, she valued her "born again" experience. At the age of 9, she confessed the Lordship of Jesus Christ under the revival preaching of Rev. Mark Ribbins at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, shortly after moving to Twinsburg. This decision was strongly influenced by her great-aunt Edna Lou Vann , and Rev. John Henry , Edna's father, with whom they lived, along with Uncle "Bubba" Vann (all deceased).

Madelon, an only child, was raised with foster children in the home. After high school and during both marriages, she moved away from Twinsburg, yet made frequent visits to the city. Her daughter, Lisa, was born on July 4,1959. Madelon returned to a permanent Twinsburg residence in 1981. Lisa, has lived in Bowling Green, Ohio since 1977. The maturing Madelon intentionally focused on relationships, fellowshipping with the Lord, extending herself to others, studying and applying scriptures in everyday life. She always had a heart for the elderly. This became more apparent as she aged. Her care for the elderly was expressed through regular Nursing Home Ministry and the devoted caregiving for her family members, so that they could remain in their homes as long as possible.

In her mature life, she was very active in many facets of church ministry at Bible Baptist Church (Garfield Heights) for more than 20 years, and also at Parkside Church since 2001. She was very thankful for all that the Lord provided, including her family members. The following were very involved, loving, and embracing of her: precious and devoted daughter Lisa; six aunts on her Dad's side (all of whom were/are uniquely younger than she), and one aunt named after her , namely, Madelon Broadnax (Robert deceased), Elizabeth Barnes, Delores Williams, Geraldine Jackson (William) , (Louise and Charlie Mae deceased); all of their children and children's children; the caring family of cousin George Brown; adopted niece and nephew Debbie and Pastor Eddie Robinson and their children, special neighbors in Twinsburg who looked out for her, the broad Christian family/community and a host of dear friends.
