Okjin Yoo passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on April 19 in Portland, Oregon. He was 87.

Born in 1934 in Goheung, South Korea, under Japanese Occupation, he endured oppression and then tragedy during the Korean War when he lost all worldly possessions, including his father. He was 18.

Determined to make it and help others, OK became a man early in life. Captured by North Koreans, he spent time in a concentration camp only to escape to tell about it. As the story goes, he befriended a guard who let him go in the night. My father easily won the favor of people by his good nature, as he would continue to do throughout life.

OK turned every obstacle into an opportunity. During the Korean war, he helped orphans and worked on a US military base to support his family. Even with limited English, Okjin found a way to make friends with US soldiers. It was hard to ignore his welcoming smile, warm eyes, deep sense of goodwill and hopeful energy.

In 1956, with the help of US soldiers, he befriended, OK was offered a chance to come to the US and start a new life. With only a few dollars in his pockets, he went on to live the American Dream and made it. After graduating from Milligan University, OK landed a job at the Chrysler Stamping Plant in Twinsburg, OH. In 1977, he started his first business. For decades, he welcomed customers at OK Cleaners in Hudson, OH, with his beloved wife, Hae Ho. Sending three kids to college, he did not stop there.

Okjin never forgot those that helped him along the way and reciprocated generously, opening the same opportunities he had for many others.

Okjin Yoo - forever "The Man." Thank you so much for your hard work, love, and integrity.

You are deeply missed.
